Airplanes are only as safe as the pilot flying them. At KCAK, where Cirrus training flights mix with business trips and weekend getaways, it’s easy to forget the most important pre-flight inspection: yourself. That’s where IMSAFE comes in.
Imagine a pilot launching from Akron–Canton at 7 a.m. after a late night of work. He’s tired, stressed, and skipped breakfast. The airplane is fine, but is he? Fatigue and low blood sugar can impair judgment just as much as alcohol.
Run IMSAFE every time:
- Illness: A sinus infection might mean pain or disorientation on climb-out.
- Medication: Even over-the-counter antihistamines can sedate.
- Stress: Distractions steal focus.
- Alcohol: Eight hours isn’t always enough—wait longer.
- Fatigue: A Cirrus cockpit demands attention. Don’t fly drowsy.
- Emotion/Eating: Flying upset—or on an empty stomach—clouds judgment.
At Akron–Canton, pilots often use quick hops to nearby airports for proficiency. That’s the perfect time to be brutally honest with yourself. If IMSAFE says “no,” respect it.
