Weight and Balance: Why “Just a Few Pounds” Matter

Weight and balance are not just math problems—they’re life-or-death calculations. Even at KCAK, with a field elevation of 1220 summer density altitudes and long cross-country loads can expose just how sensitive an airplane can be to small overloads.

Picture this: two adults, two kids, luggage, and full fuel for a family trip in a Cirrus SR22. The numbers might put you just outside the envelope, but “just a few pounds” shouldn’t matter, right? Unfortunately, it does. A heavy Cirrus will eat up more runway, climb sluggishly, and stall at a higher speed.

Just because you can does not mean you should.

Run the numbers honestly every time. Use your EFB or a paper chart and don’t fudge. If you’re over, consider reducing fuel and planning a fuel stop. That quick calculation can turn a risky departure into a safe climb-out over Canton.
