Fuel Management Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Running out of fuel is one of the most preventable mistakes in general aviation. Yet it happens far too often. At KCAK, with its mix of training flights and cross-country departures, pilots sometimes cut corners when it comes to fuel planning.

Take the example of a Cirrus SR20 departing KCAK for a “quick trip” to Columbus. The pilot estimates there’s “plenty” of fuel without dipping the tanks. En route, unexpected headwinds add time, then a runway gets closed and suddenly the reserve looks dangerously thin.

The solution? Be precise. Physically dip the tanks—don’t rely only on gauges. Know your Cirrus’s fuel burn at different power settings and calculate endurance in hours, not gallons. Write it down and update it every checkpoint.

And always plan for contingencies. If you’re down to your reserve when approaching Akron–Canton, have in mind to divert to a nearby airport. Even Akron–Fulton (KAKR) at 12 miles away can make the difference.

Smart pilots treat fuel like gold. The small inconvenience of a fuel stop is nothing compared to the consequences of pushing empty tanks.
